A Local Hero Remembered: Major Donald Robert Stokes and the 80th Anniversary of VE Day

As the nation commemorates the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, our thoughts turn to the brave individuals who served during the Second World War. Here at Stokes Tea & Coffee, this anniversary holds a particularly poignant meaning as we remember a true hero connected to our very own history: Major Donald Robert Stokes.

Major Stokes was not only a decorated WWII veteran but also the son of our founder, Robert Stokes, making him the Great Uncle of our current Managing Director, Nick Peel. His legacy extends far beyond our family business, touching the heart of the Lincoln community through his remarkable contributions both on and off the battlefield.

Before his courageous service in the war, Donald Stokes was a pivotal figure in the history of Lincoln Rugby Football Club. Following the devastation of the First World War, the local rugby scene was struggling. In 1922, a group of determined individuals, including Robert Stokes, stepped forward to reform the Lincoln Rugby Club. Leading the charge as captain was none other than Donald Stokes. His dedication and the collective efforts of his teammates laid the foundation for the thriving club we know today.

During World War II, Donald Stokes rose to the rank of Major in the Lincolnshire Regiment, 4th Battalion. Tragically, his life was cut short on 13th August 1944, at the young age of 39. He now rests in the Ranville Cemetery in Normandy, France, a testament to his ultimate sacrifice.

The connection between the Stokes family and Lincoln Rugby Club remains to this day, with Stokes Tea and Coffee's sponsorship of the Lincoln Rugby Club U16 and U18 touring party in 2023. This supported the young players in travelling to France to participate in the Annual International Armistice Festival.

This year, as part of the 80th VE Day Anniversary commemorations, the Lincoln International Bomber Command Centre is hosting a powerful installation of a Lancaster Bomber, meticulously crafted from over 20,000 individual, handcrafted ceramic poppies. This incredible artwork is the creation of Darius Sirmulevicius, originally from Lithuania but now calls Lincolnshire, home.

We are deeply honoured that within this stunning display; a special tribute recognises Major Donald Robert Stokes as a local hero. It serves as a powerful reminder of his bravery, his commitment to his community, and the enduring impact of his life.

Major Donald Robert Stokes’ story is a testament to the courage and dedication of a generation who fought for a better future, and his memory continues to inspire us all.
